Digital Camera Photographer
Digital Camera Photographer of the Year has announced the winners of 2009's competition and I am extremely proud to say that I was awarded the 1st place in the “Man-made” category for the winning entry “Gas station”. The judges were looking for photographic opportunities that highlight aspects of our world that have been shaped by the hand of man.
My image was shot when driving through the desolate landscape of Mývatn in Iceland. I encountered this abandoned gas station and for me, it showed Iceland's true colours, as the commercial and pollutant subject is clearly affected by the force of the natural world, exemplified by the strong sky above.
Digital Camera Photographer of the Year is the world's largest online photography contest, run by Digital Camera and its sister website Photoradar.com. This year it attracted more than 101.000 submissions from all four corners of the world. The winners were eventually selected by a panel of judges from Getty Images, Magnum Photos and the Press Association. My girlfriend and I attended the awards and private view event at the Mall Galleries in London and among others gave interviews to the press. To see pictures of the event, take a look here.
Being in London we also visited the Take a View Landscape Photographer of the year contest exhibition in the National Theatre, where my “Commended” image of Corfe Castle was at display. After the exhibition we attended an inspiring talk on landscape photography by Charlie Waite, one of Britain’s most famous landscape photographers. The perfect ending of a successful trip to London.
Remember that both images are also available as fine art or canvas prints in various sizes.
